Just west of Bordeaux, the tranquil Villa , is tucked away in a serene cove off the French Atlantic Ocean. The villa situated in the heart of the Bassin d’Arcachon and considered as one of the best examples of “Arcachon Architecture”, was built in 1903 for Mr. Germain Cumenge, Prosecutor of the Republic in Bordeaux.The typical Italian style lodge he built resembles, still existing, houses in Arcachon Ville d’Hiver, but is unique in its spacious chambers, its vast terrain and beach water front location.
Mr. Cumenge brilliantly succeeded in his career. He became District Attorney after which he pressed on to become First President of the Court of appeal. He and his family have left a legacy of importance to the region.
Since the family Cumenge, The villa was acquired in 1941 by the family Sainte Marie from Bordeaux before being cherished by Mrs. & Mr. Bardon, the bemoaned Mayor of Lanton.Mrs. and Mr. Bardon changed the name “La Tosca” to “Hurlevent”. However, the current owners of the estate have lovingly renovated the house and its 4500m2 parks and reinstated its Old Glory. La Tosca was redeemed.
Since the late 18th century the Bassin d’Arcachon is renowned for its reinvigorating micro climate. The particular blend of pine forest and ocean air is proven to be health preventive and beneficial to many people suffering from heart or lung conditions.
The Bassin d’Arcachon is also known for its amazing natural light shows. It is not surprising that the world famous painter Toulouse-Lautrec chose to spend many summers at the neighboring villa “Bagatelle”.
